Apple Donates First Generation iPads to Teach For America

According to CNN, Apple has shipped more than nine thousand refurbished iPads to Teach For America.

Teach For America, a nonprofit organization based in New York, plans to distribute the tablets to teachers nationwide for classroom use.

Cook mentioned Apple’s plans to “kick off a matching gift program for charitable donations” within an internal memo earlier this month. He confirmed that Apple would be matching employee donations – up to $10,000 per individual.

According to reports, the first generation Apple slates were shipped from Apple to 38 states where Teach For America programs are operated.

The units were donated by customers who upgraded to the iPad 2 and chose to donate their old devices to the charitable program.
