Multiple NFL teams, including the Dallas Cowboys and the Seattle Seahawks, are considering replacing hundred-page playbooks with sleek Apple iPads. Â Not only would this revolution save nearly 10,000 sheets of paper each game, but teams would have access to varying formations, printouts, and videos on the fly.

Trees aren’t the only ones that would benefit from this change – coaches, coordinators, and even players would have easy access to defensive and offensive images. Â Such photos could then be downloaded wirelessly via either 3G or Wi-Fi.

If one of the players lets a hole open up, or the quarterback misses an open receiver… start up the iPad, download said video, watch wirelessly on the sideline and point out mistakes.  iPad technology wouldn’t require someone “up top” to review plays before the head coach makes the decision to challenge the play or not.

Instead of information and options being printed on a flat piece of paper, all of this content could potentially be available with animation and depth.

Owners, coaches, and even players are vouching for the iPad and its capabilities. Â The only concern is the safety and security of teams’ digital playbooks and recordings. Â Although the iPad can be wiped clean remotely, skeptical coaches do not want their information falling into the wrong hands.

To Pete Walsh, the head of technology for the Dallas Cowboys, the iPad is the future of playmaking and review on the fly – is it? Â Leave your thoughts in the comment section below.
