More Than 500,000 Apps Approved by Apple

Apple has reportedly approved over half a million iPhone, iPod touch and iPad apps. While there are only about 400,000 apps in the App Store right now, not every app that’s approved stays in the App Store forever. But for a platform that’s only a few years old, 400,000 or 500,000 apps ain’t bad at all.

Of course, a fair number of those apps are poorly made games or simple apps that don’t have much to offer. But not only are there more apps for iOS than any other smartphone platform at the moment, but it sure seems like there are more high quality apps for the platform as well. The Android Market, BlackBerry App World, and Windows Phone Marketplace deal with their fair share of shovelware, too.

The folks at Chomp and Chillingo put together the above infographic to mark the impressive milestone. A few interesting points:

  • 37% of the apps are free, for a total of 147,966 apps
  • The average price for a paid app is $3.64
  • The average developer has 4.6 apps in the App Store

You can check out the full infographic on Chillingo’s Facebook page.  A graphical compilation, including a slick timeline and a list of top applications, can be found on the same page.
